InlineOn the passing of our inspiration and teacher BKS Iyengar we reprint this letter from Bertha Shakinovsky the president of Iyengar Yoga Australia. Bertha's letter eloquently expresses the sense of sadness we feel but also our sense of deep gratitude for the life of an extraordinary human who has inspired and energised so many.

 

Our Beloved Guruji

BKS Iyengar


It is with a very heavy heart that I write to let you know that our beloved Guruji has passed away.  Sri BKS Iyengar passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 96. I will pass on our heartfelt sympathy to Geetaji, Prashantji, Abhijata and the Iyengar family on behalf of the Australian Association.



Guruji started yoga at the age of 17 and continued to develop and refine his practice of yoga throughout his life. Even at the ripe old age of 95, he could be seen practicing in the main hall of the RIMYI. He was an artist at work and practiced with precision and beauty. It was a privilege to watch him practice and to be taught by him.



Through his unique combination of strength and complete dedication together with intellectual and spiritual prowess, Guruji evolved the technique known as ‘Iyengar Yoga’. He made it possible for ordinary human beings to practice this technique and to experience the wisdom of the yoga sutras. Today, as a result of his inspirational work and teachings, this extraordinary man known to us as Guruji, has transformed the lives of thousands of people in so many countries around the world.



We will always be grateful for the enormous contribution that Guruji has made to mankind. We appreciate how Guruji dedicated his life to the practice and teaching of yoga and his generosity of spirit in sharing this knowledge with us. 



Whilst Guruji’s physical presence may no longer be with us, those of us who have derived so much joy and peace from his yoga know that Guruji’s guiding light and inspiration will continue to burn brightly and illuminate the lives of many people.



We owe our very existence as yoga practitioners and as an Association to Guruji.  With the deepest gratitude, love and respect, thank you Guruji for what you have given us. We will miss you Guruji and shall hold you in our hearts forever.



Geetaji’s dedication to Guruji gives us some insight into the way in which Guruji influenced so many of our lives.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga

with Clare Pritchard (Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and counselor)

Yarraville Yoga Centre is again offering a women only yoga course for survivors of trauma. The emphasis in a trauma sensitive yoga class is to create a safe, predictable and non-judgemental space in which survivors can look into, explore and befriend their bodies again. It can be an enormous part of the healing process for trauma victims to reclaim their body as their own. By developing a more positive relationship to the body and learning calming and centering techniques, students may learn strategies to face triggers in a safe, non-harmful way.

The 8-week courses will continue in 2014! Now Wednesdays 12-1.15pm
Term 3: July 22-Sept 9
Term 4: Oct 13-Dec 2
